The Connection Between a Child’s Brain and Body

When we think about childhood development, we often separate learning into neat little boxes ie. “cognitive,” “physical,” “social" etc but in reality, these areas are beautifully and powerfully connected.

The brain and the body don’t work in isolation; they work as a team!

From a psychology and child development perspective, movement is learning.

Every time a child jumps, claps, spins, or imitates an action, their brain is firing neurons, strengthening connections, and building pathways that support attention, memory, and problem-solving skills.

🧩 Cognitive and Physical Development: Two Sides of the Same Coin

When a child moves their body with purpose, whether it’s balancing on one foot or following an action cue , the brain is processing information from multiple systems at once.

This sensory input helps children:

  • Develop coordination and motor planning

  • Strengthen executive functioning (thinking, remembering, following directions)

  • Build communication and language understanding through imitation and response

  • Enhance emotional regulation by engaging in rhythmic and purposeful movement

In the early years, these brain-body connections are crucial.

Movement-rich play supports the development of neural pathways that underpin later learning such as reading, writing, social interaction, and emotional control all depend on the body and brain learning to work together.

🎯 Introducing the Brain vs Hands Circuit Game

ree

With this understanding in mind, I wanted to create something that helps nurture those connections in a fun, practical, and inclusive way.

That’s how our Brain & Hands Sensory Circuit was developed!

This engaging, printable activity is designed to support:

🧠 Cognitive processing

🖐️ Motor coordination

👂 Listening and attention

💬 Understanding and following instructions

It’s a simple but powerful tool to use in Early Years settings ,Schools, SEND environments, or even at home , offering a sensory break that supports learning through movement and play.

🌟 Want to Try It for Free?

I’m currently looking for someone to trial our NEW Brain vs Hands Circuit Games and share how you use it , through photos, short videos and feedback.

In return, you’ll receive the complete printable kit free of charge, and your content may be featured on Sign & Bloom’s website and social pages (with full credit, of course!).

If you’d like to take part or know someone who would love to give it a go, please get in touch , I’d love to see how your little learners connect their brains and hands in action 💛
