PECS vs AAC: What’s the Difference?

ree

As this month marks AAC Awareness Month, we wanted to touch base on a popular topic that often comes up.

When it comes to supporting communication, there are lots of different approaches and communication tools out there., and two terms that often come up are PECS and AAC.

They sound like they may be quite similar , but they are not the same thing.

Understanding the difference helps us choose the right support for each child or adult, and ensures everyone has the best chance to be heard and understood.

What is PECS?

PECS stands for Picture Exchange Communication System.

This is very much a structured approach that uses pictures to help someone communicate.

  • The person hands over a picture to their communication partner to request or share something.

  • It starts very simply – one picture for one need (“I want biscuit”).

  • Over time, it builds into longer sentences and more complex communication.

  • PECS is low-tech, highly visual, and designed to give someone a clear way to start communicating if speech is limited or not yet developed.

What is AAC?

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It’s a much broader term, covering all the ways we can support or replace spoken communication.

AAC can include:

  • PECS (yes, PECS is a type of AAC!)

  • Signed Systems

  • Gestures and facial expressions

  • Written words or symbol boards

  • Communication apps or speech-generating devices

The key thing about AAC is that it’s an umbrella – it’s not one system, but a whole range of options that can be tailored to the individual.

How Are They Different?

  • Scope: PECS is one specific program. AAC is the bigger picture, including many different tools and methods.

  • Structure vs Flexibility: PECS follows a set progression of phases. AAC can be flexible and adapted, from low-tech boards to high-tech devices.

  • Use in Practice: Someone might start with PECS to build the basics of communication, then move on to (or alongside) other AAC systems as their skills grow.

Why Does This Matter?

Communication is a human right.

Every individual deserves a way to express their needs, share ideas, connect with others, and feel included.

  • PECS can be a brilliant starting point to teach the foundations of communication.

  • AAC gives people multiple pathways to communicate, building independence and confidence.

  • The most important thing is matching the method to the person’s needs and making sure those around them understand and support their communication.

At Sign and Bloom, we believe in valuing every form of communication. Whether through speech, signs, pictures, or technology, every voice matters.!

We can offer tailored support with all aspects of communication, whether that’s within your setting, for individuals, or in the wider community.
